Robert Lenz’ flag design depicting a sun rising from Lake Michigan was chosen from 30,000 rankings by over 6,000 voters on Tuesday, June 14th at the 88.9 RadioMilwaukee headquarters in Walkers Point.

Lenz’ design is simplistic, a white circle representing a sun, rising into a yellow sky. The sun rises over dark blue waters with three stripes, or waves, which represent the city’s three rivers and three founders.

Sunrise Over the Lake was chosen from five flag designs, and narrowly beat out DeChazier Stokes-Johnson’s “M” Star design.

The new flag design has since been incorporated in both fun and official capacities. This includes logos for the Department of Public Works and Milwaukee Police badges to T-shirts and beer glass decals.
