Bevan K. Baker
Commissioner of Health, City of Milwaukee

Bevan Baker was raised around medical professionals and givers.  His mother was a nurse and his grandmother was a mid-wife.  And his father, his strongest influence, was a military veteran and a master carpenter who advised him to always invest in the community and make a difference.  Commissioner Baker is making them all proud.

We’re having breakfast with Mr. Baker @ City Hall to learn about his path to leadership and the business of keeping Milwaukee healthy and safe.  He’ll talk about what keeps him up at night (reducing infant mortality, improving water quality – even restaurant adherence to health codes) and what he thinks we can do to reach our professional potential and be game changers in MKE.

Bevan K. Baker is Commissioner of Health for the City of Milwaukee. He was nominated in 2004 by Mayor Tom Barrett and re-confirmed for a second term in 2008. As Health Commissioner, Mr. Baker serves as the city’s chief advisor on health. He is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the agency’s departments in their collective efforts to promote the health and well-being of the people of Milwaukee.

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Baker served as the Chief Operating Officer for the City of Milwaukee Health Department from 2001 to 2004. He has also served as Chief Operating Officer with the Health Choice Network, Inc. in Miami, Florida and as the Associate Director of Administration for the Addiction Research and Treatment Corporation in Brooklyn, New York.

Currently, Mr. Baker is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also serves on numerous boards, including the State and Local Action Advisory Group for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

Mr. Baker received his Masters degree in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia and his Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from Winston-Salem State University. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
