Each year, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education selects and rates universities across the country for the “highest research activity.” This specific rating is considered a gold standard of higher education and was awarded to only 115 out of the total 4,665 universities evaluated this year. University of Wisconsin Milwaukee received a place on the short list.

This certifies UWM as an “R1” doctoral university, which is a step up from its previous “R2” ranking.

Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska, dean of The Graduate School, calls this achievement “a wish come true,” and says that it will be a benefit in attracting graduate students and faculty members in the future.
