Mary K. Braza is one of Milwaukee’s leading sports litigators. With more than 30 years of experience, Mary has a broad range of talent from litigation to deal making. Her work has taken her around the US solving some of the nations largest sports litigations.

 

Start your Friday morning off right with an inspiring presentation and a cup of joe. Join us, as we talk all things sports and law with Mary K. Braza at Foley & Lardner on Friday, February 3rd. Mary will talk about her successful career in law, sports and how to do it all.   

 

BACKGROUND 

Before joining Foley & Lardner, Mary earned her bachelor’s degree and her J.D. degree from Cornell University. During her time at Cornell, she worked as the editor of the Cornell International Law Journal. Mary also has a membership with the Wisconsin Bar and she also has been granted practice in many federal district and appellate courts.

Mary’s professional career includes her work with the Major-League Baseball Association working as a strategic advisor. Moreover, her impressive résumé also comprises of her work with world famous former Commissioner Allan H. (“Bud”) Selig. She also is an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School and the John Marshall Law School.

Mary K. Braza focuses her efforts on sports law as she is the founder of Foley & Lardner’s Sports Industry team. From her work with Foley & Lardner, she has built their sports industry litigation reputation, putting Foley & Lardner at the forefront of some of the highest-profile sports acquisitions, litigations and media deals. One of the highest-profile cases that Mary has worked on was the University of Maryland’s fight against the conference realignment. Her work also has included litigating cases of stakeholders, sports franchise acquisitions and valuations, team operations and broadcastings and so much more. Lastly, prior to becoming a leader in the sports law industry, Mary Braza worked on litigating several commercial disputes in federal and state courts.

Some of Mary K. Braza's impressive work includes: 

  • Represented Major League Baseball in a ticket holder class action litigation over the All-Star Game 
  • Represented the estate in the sale of a 30 perccent interest in a National Football League franchise in 2011
  • Advised on the possible formation of a team-based professional bowling league 
  • Advised on the formation of an international electronic gaming league 
  • Counseled on relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington, D.C. and negotiated the successful settlement of a dispute concerning public funding for the Washington Nationals Ballpark. 

Some of Mary K. Braza's recognition have includes: 

  • Receiving the highest performance rating in Martindale-Hubbell's peer review 
  • 2012 recipient of Joseph A. O'Neill Award 
  • Received America's Leading Lawyers in the area of sports law by Chambers USA 2006-2016
  • Best Lawyers in America 2017 list 

In addition to working with Foley & Lardner, Mary Braza has an impressive resume as she serves on several boards. Professionally, Mary is an elected member of the Sports Lawyers Association board of directors. Additionally, she is the vice chair of the National Sports Law Institutes Board of advisors, just to name a few.
