Dr. Vicki Martin
President, MATC

Dr. Martin has a 40 year tenure in higher education and she knows not only how to spark organizational growth thru strategy - she's a relationship builder.

Under her leadership, 1,000+ students have access to tuition-free education, $5M has been raised for scholarship and class enhancement, the MATC foundation networth increased to upwards of $13M, the college's district board licenses Milwaukee's PBS programs, 40,000 students enroll in school annually and nearly 2,000 employees have jobs at MATC.

Add to that the $1.7 billion dollar economic impact of MATC on the Milwaukee Region and you have a woman who can tell you how to build something.  You should meet her.

BACKGROUND

Dr. Vicki Martin was named the 10th president of Milwaukee Area Technical College in July 2014. She has served the college since 1988 and prior to being named president, was executive vice president and provost.  In her time at the college, Dr. Martin has spearheaded new, innovated programs to better prepare students for success, while benefiting Milwaukee's business community.

Her thought leadership has sparked the following initiatives and recognition:

  • The MATC Promise program, which provides free tuition and fees to students who meet initial eligibility criteria and meet standards while enrolled at MATC. The program is funded entirely through private donations to the MATC Foundation.
  • MATC’s Center for Engaged and Service-Learning, which strengthens classroom activities, encourages community participation, and benefits students by enhancing their leadership skills.
  • MATC earned the prestigious Carnegie Foundation 2015 Community Engagement Classification and is the only two-year technical college in the nation to ever receive the classification.
  • MATC launched the Men of Color program, designed to provide services to men from minority groups and help improve their academic and career outcomes and improve retention and completion rates by collaborating with local businesses and community organizations.
  • Dr. Martin spearheaded two initiatives to address Milwaukee's skills gap: 1) CEO breakfasts and 2) A revamped Workforce Solutions program to develop strong relationships with businesses in key sectors and provide an educated, high-qualified workforce that will help maintain the region’s economic vitality.

Before coming to MATC, Dr. Martin worked at Carroll College/Columbia College of Nursing as a student counselor and dean of students.
The Milwaukee native holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from UW-Milwaukee, master's degrees from the University of North Dakota (counseling and guidance) and Cardinal Stritch University (business management), and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis from UW-Madison.
